La promenade des Anglais est, pour le monde entier, le plus fort symbole de la ville. La présence de familles de notables puissantes, a doté la ville d'un riche patrimoine de résidences privées. Chaque jour, depuis la colline du château de Nice, la population niçoise est prévenue qu'il est midi pile! Selon la tradition, le lord Écossais Thomas Coventry-More, ancien colonel de l’armée anglaise, venait à Nice tous les hivers de 1861 à 1866. En 1862, souhaitant déjeuner avec son épouse qui tardait toujours sur la promenade des Anglais, il propose au maire de Nice, François Malausséna, de tirer un coup de canon chaque midi. Sa proposition fut acceptée! C'est maintenant une bombe de feu d’artifice qui est lancée à 60 mètres de haut chaque jour, sauf les 14 juillet en hommage aux victimes de l'attentat de Nice, en 2016. * Un grand merci !
